Nothing in the Google Ads interface exposes a per-user record of API reads to the account owner. There is no &#8220;data accessed&#8221; report, no export log, and no email notification tied to a download event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Change history tool, which is the closest thing Google Ads has to an audit log, is explicitly a record of modifications. &lt;cite index=&#8221;2-1&#8243;&gt;It lists changes made to your account, campaigns, and ad groups over the past 2 years&lt;\/cite&gt; \u2014 paused campaigns, added keywords, previous budget amounts, and the user who made each one. Downloads are not a change, so they never appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What an admin <em>can<\/em> actually see about you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Your access level and email.<\/strong> Under Admin \u2192 Access and security, every user is listed with their email address and permission level (Admin, Standard, Read only, Email only, Billing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Last sign-in date.<\/strong> The user list shows when each email last signed in. This tells the admin <em>that<\/em> you accessed the account on a given day. It tells them nothing about what you did, and it doesn&#8217;t distinguish a web login from an Editor sync.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Everything you posted.<\/strong> &lt;cite index=&#8221;6-1&#8243;&gt;Change history records ad creation and edits, bid adjustments, budget changes, conversion action edits, and more&lt;\/cite&gt;, attributed to the user who made them. It can also be filtered by user, which makes it trivial for an admin to pull a list of every action taken under your login.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Manager account visibility.<\/strong> If the account sits under an MCC, the manager account sees the same information across all linked accounts \u2014 and can revoke your access instantly without touching the client account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Client type, at the API level.<\/strong> The Google Ads API&#8217;s change event resource &lt;cite index=&#8221;1-1&#8243;&gt;indicates which client type made the change \u2014 for example API vs. web client \u2014 alongside the user who made it&lt;\/cite&gt;. A technical admin pulling change events can therefore tell that an edit came from Editor rather than the browser. Again: only for changes, not downloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three situations people are usually in when they ask this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;m auditing an account before a pitch.&#8221;<\/strong> Fine. Downloading to Editor to review structure, negatives, and ad copy leaves no trace and posts nothing. If you have read-only access, Editor won&#8217;t let you push changes anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;m leaving an agency and want a copy of the accounts I built.&#8221;<\/strong> The audit trail is not your problem. Your employment contract, NDA, and the client&#8217;s data-processing terms are. Campaign data typically belongs to the client or the agency, not the person who managed it. &#8220;No one can see it&#8221; is not the same as &#8220;I&#8217;m allowed to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I want to work locally without breaking anything.&#8221;<\/strong> This is the intended use of Editor. Download, edit offline, review the pending-changes list, then post. Nothing is live until you click Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The part that matters more than the log file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absence of an audit trail is not permission. Three things still apply after you download:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contract.<\/strong> Most agency and freelance agreements have confidentiality and return-of-materials clauses covering client account data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data protection law.<\/strong> Google Ads accounts contain customer match lists, conversion data, and other personal data. Exporting that to a personal laptop can be a compliance failure under GDPR-style regimes regardless of who noticed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Google&#8217;s terms.<\/strong> Access is granted per account, per user, and can be revoked at any time. Retaining exported data after your access ends is not covered by the access you had.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need account data for a portfolio or case study, the clean route is to request written permission and use aggregated, anonymised numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you&#8217;re the admin reading this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot detect downloads, so control the input instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grant the minimum access level.<\/strong> Read-only lets someone view and download in Editor but blocks posting. Reserve Admin for people who actually need to manage users and billing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use a manager account.<\/strong> Link client accounts to an MCC so access is granted and revoked centrally, not per account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offboard the same day.<\/strong> Remove access under Admin \u2192 Access and security the moment someone leaves the project. Also check for lingering Google Ads API tokens and linked third-party tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review Change history by user weekly.<\/strong> Filter by user to see what each person actually changed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Put it in the contract.<\/strong> Since you can&#8217;t monitor exports technically, cover them contractually.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does Google Ads notify the admin when someone downloads an account in Editor?<\/strong> No. There is no notification, email, or dashboard entry for downloads or syncs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can the admin see that I opened Google Ads Editor?<\/strong> Not directly. They can see a &#8220;Last signed in&#8221; date for your email on the Admin page, which doesn&#8217;t specify the tool used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Will changes I make in Editor show up in Change history?<\/strong> Only after you post them. Local edits sitting in Editor are invisible until pushed to the live account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How long does Google Ads keep change history?<\/strong> Two years. Data older than that is not retained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can a read-only user download the full account in Editor?<\/strong> Yes. Read-only access permits downloading and viewing; it blocks posting changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the client get an alert when I download their data?<\/strong> No. Neither the client nor the manager account receives any alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can Google itself see the download?<\/strong> Google operates the API and the servers, so the request exists on their side. What matters here is that nothing is surfaced to account administrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is downloading a client account into Editor allowed?<\/strong> Technically, yes, if you have valid access.
