Email Marketing Tips for Small Businesses | Guide for Freelancers

Introduction:

Yesterday, a friend of mine asked me a question about email marketing. I gave him a detailed answer, but at the end, he suggested that I create a video on the topic so that more people could benefit.

Well, my name is Imran Nadir, and I talk about digital marketing on all my social media platforms. You can follow me there for more insights.

In this post, I’m going to share things that people often don’t tell you about email marketing.

Who Should Read This?

This post is for small business owners facing challenges with email marketing and those who are struggling to convert leads or make sales through their email campaigns.

It’s also for people working in digital marketing or freelancing in email marketing. This is a reminder to myself as well.

What is Email Marketing?

Email marketing is a form of digital marketing where you send emails to promote products, services, offers, and much more. There are two types of marketing I believe in: organic and paid marketing.

In digital marketing, email marketing is considered organic marketing because it’s cost-effective. Unlike Google Ads, Meta Ads, or LinkedIn Ads, email marketing has a low cost involved, and you can even run it with just an email account or an inexpensive tool.

Benefits of Email Marketing

  1. Cost Effectiveness: Compared to paid advertising, email marketing is much cheaper. You either use an email tool or even just your email address.
  2. Direct Access to Customers: Sending emails helps you establish a direct connection with your customers. They receive emails that address them personally, creating a sense of personal connection.
  3. High ROI (Return on Investment): Email marketing can offer a great ROI. For example, by reaching out to 100 people and spending $100, you might get replies from 2-3 people, and even convert one of them into a paying customer. This can bring in $300-$500 per month from that one client.
  4. Builds Customer Relationships and Loyalty: Email marketing helps you maintain relationships with customers. Since they receive personalized emails, they feel connected to your brand and are more likely to stay loyal.

Types of Email Marketing Campaigns

  1. Newsletters: These are periodic emails containing updates or news from a company. For example, if you’ve signed up for a service like Amazon, you may receive newsletters about new product launches or company updates.
  2. Announcements/Updates: Companies send emails to inform their customers about new products or services. For example, if my company, Marketist, launches a new service like media buying, I would send out an email informing all my existing customers.
  3. Welcome Series: For new subscribers, businesses often send a series of welcome emails. For example, if you sign up for an e-commerce store, you may receive a series of welcome emails introducing you to the store and its products.
  4. Re-engagement Campaigns: These emails aim to re-engage customers who haven’t interacted with your business recently. These campaigns can keep the connection alive.
  5. Abandoned Cart Recovery: This type of campaign targets users who added items to their cart but didn’t complete the purchase. A follow-up email may encourage them to complete the purchase, often offering a discount.
  6. Cold Email / Lead Generation: This is a crucial aspect, which we’ll cover in more detail in this post. Cold emailing is a technique to generate leads, but it requires strategic planning.

Building Your Email List

Before starting any email marketing campaign, it’s essential to build an email list. Here are the main ways to build an email list:

  1. Organic List: These are people who are already aware of you and your brand. They could be customers, clients, subscribers, or followers.
  2. Lead Magnets: Offering free resources like eBooks, guides, checklists, or discount codes in exchange for email subscriptions is a great way to grow your list. If you don’t have lead magnets, I recommend creating some to attract subscribers.
  3. Purchased Lists: Some businesses choose to buy email lists from data providers, though this method is typically used for cold email campaigns.

Key Elements of a Successful Email Campaign

  1. Domain Choice: Never use your brand’s main domain (e.g., [email protected]) for email campaigns. This can harm your brand’s credibility. Instead, purchase a separate domain specifically for email campaigns.
  2. Email Health: Ensure that your email domain is set up properly with records like SPF, DKIM, and MX to help your emails land in inboxes rather than the spam folder.
  3. Email Warm-Up: When you buy a new domain or create a new email address, you must “warm up” the email. This means sending a few emails each day and gradually increasing the volume. Using a tool like Instantly can help with this process.
  4. Email Content: The content of your email is critical. Follow the AIDA model (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) to craft compelling subject lines, body copy, and calls to action.

Conclusion: Email Marketing is a Different Beast

Email marketing is distinct from paid advertising (like Google Ads or Meta Ads). The assets we use for email marketing are different, and we need to be extra careful to ensure our campaigns are successful.

Always check the health of your domain, warm up your email list, and pay attention to the quality of your content.

By following these steps, you can run successful email campaigns and grow your business.
